Jazz / Indie - Can you rock on the piano? This question preoccupied Basel-based pianist Lucca Fries for a long time before he brought his own rock band, Fri3ser, to life. Over the past ten years, Fries gained inspiring experiences with his internationally acclaimed bands Hely and Ikarus, as well as in the ensemble of American post-minimalist composer Virgil Moorefield. During this time, he continued to develop his musical language and worked on the idea of how to integrate his passion for heavy, primal rock beats into the context of a jazz trio.
With Thun-based electric bassist Sarah Zaugg (Sha's Feckel, Hathors) and Zurich drummer Luca Ramella (Mister Milano, Big Zis), Fries found two musicians who share his love for powerful expression while also bringing the sensitivity needed for long, improvised passages. Fri3ser's compositions are influenced by alternative rock and minimal music, characterized by warm, percussive piano tones, and allow ample space for extended musical exploration.

Alheidis – Fragile and Powerful Melodies
Alheidis – Fragile and Powerful Melodies
Club Summer. Alheidis is a captivating duo that brings their music to life with just vocals and bass. Their songs, consisting of a melody and an accompaniment, are as fragile as they are powerful, direct, and honest. This is not a dogmatic concept, but rather the way the songs reveal themselves in their simplicity and intimacy, combined with the pure joy of music and collaboration.
Alice Paroissien, born and raised in the suburbs of Paris, has always been fascinated by various vocal styles, from American vibes to Hispanic rhythms and the gentle nuances of Indian singers. With a classical education and experience in choirs, she joined the singing class at the Conservatoire de Pantin at 17 and studied musicology at the Sorbonne. Her passion for culture led her to continue her opera studies at the Bern University of the Arts, where she discovered jazz, inspiring her to compose and produce her own music. Mischa Frey is a bassist living in Wettingen who has worked across free improvisation, jazz, and pop since his studies at ZHDK. As a sideman, improviser, and freelancer, he is well-versed in various musical styles and has made a name for himself in the Swiss music scene through diverse projects.

Byproduct – A Defining Side Effect
Byproduct – A Defining Side Effect
Club Summer. The young band Byproduct started at the Langnau Jazz Nights as a combo workshop with American pianist Ethan Iverson. Originally assembled for a single concert, the musicians are performing a second unique concert in Zurich without their mentor—as a byproduct of a workshop.
The repertoire for this evening is neither lactic nor acidic, but rather modern and fluid. The young musicians bring original pieces, standards from the songbook, and perhaps a hint of Ethan Iverson (if not in composition, then certainly in attitude).

Kenneth Jimenez, originally from Costa Rica, is a bassist living in New York City, who has made a name for himself far beyond the States with his skilled playing. Swiss drummer Samir Böhringer learned his craft at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), among others, and brought the trio to Rank with his initiative.

Milla Pluton - Funny Lofi-Pop with Psychedelic-Rock Grooves
Milla Pluton from Geneva brings funny Lofi-Pop to Zurich, accompanied by Psychedelic-Rock Grooves and burning French prose.

Valentin Liechti Trio - Dreams Carved in Stone
The roots of this musical collaboration run deep, as Rodrigo Aravena and Valentin Liechti were roommates for years, and Shems Bendali has been a part of the vibrant Swiss jazz scene for over a decade. This power trio delves into the fusion of acoustic and electric sounds, creating a musical landscape that fluctuates between deep grooves and moments of introspection.
The triangle of their instruments occasionally transforms into a diamond, especially when electronic elements are seamlessly integrated. Their music leads listeners into a surreal melancholy, soaked in mystery, while simultaneously leaving ample room for intensive experimentation. The backdrop of their sound exploration is cinematic, stretching across horizons and daring into the expanse of space.

Leipold, Bucher, Lo Bianco Trio – Chamber Music Poetry
Leipold, Bucher, Lo Bianco Trio – Chamber Music Poetry
With Samuel Leipold on the guitar, Jürg Bucher on the clarinet, and Luca Lo Bianco on the double bass, the trio creates rare music that is spectacularly relaxed and free from intrusiveness. They nurture an entrancing art of nuances, chamber-music-like, improvised, finely balanced, and eminently lyrical.
The marvel of their performance: It offers not only atmospheric stimuli to the ear but, delving deeper into the nocturnal soundscape, also sophisticated structures. Here, melodic arcs and tension curves are formed, and clever conclusions are drawn. A quiet, yet precise throw. The music is characterized by instrumental intimacy amidst all aesthetic expansiveness, an experience not to be missed.

Linda and Lukas Vogel - Spheres of the Kaleidoscopic
A musical journey that transcends the boundaries of the ordinary. Linda, with her vocals and virtuosity on the harp accompanied by effects and samplers, merges with Lukas, who masters synthesizers, modular effects, and computers, to create a unique experience. Their joint performance wanders through the realms of hypnosis, inviting the audience on an auditory voyage through the sea and cosmos, where acoustic and synthetic elements weave a mesmerizing kaleidoscope.
Ostinato patterns thread through improvised narratives, unfolding the musical worlds of Linda and Lukas. At the heart of their sound experiments is Lukas's modular rack, almost an artwork in itself with its myriad cables—more complex and intertwined than the strings on Linda's harp. The siblings have been making music together since their childhood and later pursued their own musical paths. When Lukas returned to Switzerland in 2023 after 15 years in Germany, they shared a rehearsal space and rediscovered their creative collaboration. Together, they reconnect with their roots and continue their musical journey with enthusiasm.

DIVR's unique soundscapes are born in the moment. The trio, featuring Philipp Eden on piano & synth, Raphael Walser on double bass, and Jonas Ruther on drums, practices mutual listening and plays with the resonance within the band – a meditative concentration that extends to the audience. Their album "Is This Water" flows musically like water—sometimes warm, sometimes cold—offering a fascinating experience where one can bathe in their polyrhythmic, spinning, organic, and epic music.
Comfortable in the shared space they create while playing, they have long been familiar, having met in other projects as a rhythm section. They developed their band sound in free trio passages, deciding to make this free interplay the core of their joint project. Before embarking on their musical journey, they celebrate the ritual of drinking 10 cups of Puerh tea. John Cage said: "The act of listening is in fact an act of composing." JMO - A Nod to the Art of Storytelling
JMO whisks you away to a world where each note narrates a tale. Jan Galega Brönnimann from Switzerland, Moussa Cissokho from Senegal, and Omri Hason from Israel interlace their cultural roots and musical experiences into a distinctive auditory adventure. The gentle melody of the kora, a traditional African harp, melds with the warm timbre of the bass clarinet, complemented by dynamic oriental percussion. The trio offers a rare chance to experience the tension between traditional and modern music up close.
Their debut "Al Nge Taa" translates to "Let's move!" and that's precisely what happens – you are moved, both emotionally and physically. The music, emerging from their diverse backgrounds, creates an enchanting soundscape that captivates listeners. With their artisanal skill and profound connection to musical tradition, the trio skillfully oscillates between enchantingly ethereal moments and rhythmically explosive crescendos. They produce an authentic and contemporary chamber music experience that is seldom encountered.

HOLD - Evolving Soundscapes
HOLD - Evolving Soundscapes
Roelli on the synth and modular, Grin on drums and percussion, and Martinet on double bass and synths have been playing together for a long time, and this cohesion is audible. Their style and name may have shifted, but their essence remains constant: a musical journey through time that captures the present moment. A HOLD concert is an electronic dream, a galactic journey, a frenetic trance. An exceptional experience that lingers in memory.

Shingo Knob - A tapestry of analog and digital sounds.
Shingo Knob - A tapestry of analog and digital sounds.
The freedom and sensuality of music, seemingly emerging from an alchemical cauldron: Andreas, with his voice and mouth percussion, and Lea, experimenting with electric bass, synths, and her own voice, create a musical experience that blends the archaic with the contemporary. Their sounds are a bubbling distillate of live sampling, beatboxing, and field recordings, an eruption that seems to dissolve gravity.
Beneath the starry sky of Southern France, at the root of an ancient oak tree and in rhythm with the orbit of Venus, they found their musical language. Inspired by the intensity of the place—and an unforgettable sheep cheese—they prepare their intergalactic dance shoes to overcome gravity. When the charismatic Bernese electronic artist Lea Heimann collides with the well-traveled vocal virtuoso Andreas Schaerer, the result is nothing short of otherworldly.

ARBRE - Suisse Diagonales Jazz at Rank
ARBRE - Suisse Diagonales Jazz at Rank
The Bernese collective ARBRE sounds larger than it is. Mélusine Chappuis, Paul Butscher, and Xavier Almeida have navigated their expansive soundscapes, somewhere between jazz and alternative, on stages throughout Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
The number of venues and countries, though impressive for a band formed in 2021, is as inconsequential as the number of musicians or instruments they employ. What matters most and is truly beautiful is their unity. Everything, yes, everything is collectively decided, and the shared creative process takes precedence. This includes mutual support, growth together, transformation, and coming together again. Their first album, "Lunaires," fell under the genre term atmospheric jazz. On their second album, "Mes épaules seront rivières" (Neuklang Records), the trio sounds more defiant and serious. Yet, the ARBRE sound remains: grand, expansive, multidimensional, and intricate. Infused with absolute love for sound details, long arcs, and each other.

Anna Aaron - When Pop Meets Techno
Anna Aaron - When Pop Meets Techno
Anna Aaron combines melodic songwriting with electronic flair to create a unique sound.
Main Text: Anna Aaron's musical world is a synthesis of her melodic songcraft and the pulsating rhythms of her electronic projects. Her sound, characterized by deep basses and catchy rhythms, can transform into a club-like experience when performed live. Throughout, her voice remains the connecting, emotionally touching element. With "Delphi," she explores minimalist electronic music, where ocean waves and everyday sounds evolve into improvised melodies. In the heart of Basel, she started with pop music but soon discovered her inclination towards electronic music. From this discovery emerged "Delphi," an expression of her second musical soul.

Garn - Polyrhythmic soundscapes that transport you to another world
Garn - Polyrhythmic soundscapes that transport you to another world
Garn is not just a band; it is an ode to the euphoria of life, an echo of cinematic images, and expansive journeys. Marc Stucki on saxophone, Urs Müller on guitar, Fabian M. Müller on piano, Claude Meier on bass, and Christoph Steiner on drums – together they weave a harmonically rich and earthy tapestry of sound. Their music is a warm sanctuary in the rugged mountain landscape of the Swiss Alps, where one oscillates between the extremes of nature – from icy snow to the comforting hot spring.
Founded as part of a Carte Blanche by Claude Meier, Garn came together in 2018 and has been composing music tailored to their bodies and souls ever since. Their rehearsals are filled with passionate debates, infusing their music with a unique depth and a certain defiance. They follow the philosophy of Thelonius Monk: they know how to play 'right,' now they play 'wrong,' and in doing so, they land exactly where they should. Each concert is an invitation to lean back, close your eyes, and fully surrender to the flow of tones.

Root 70 – Acoustic Jazz, Sophisticated and Melodic
On the road for 23 years and as fresh as ever. Nils Wogram’s Root 70 plays melodies that touch the soul.
With Nils Wogram (Trombone), Hayden Chisholm (Alto Saxophone), Matt Penman (Bass), and Jochen Rueckert (Drums), Root 70 breathes life into jazz. Comprising two New Zealanders and two Germans, brought together in Cologne, New Zealand, and New York, the quartet skillfully blends tradition and modernity. The four musicians have known each other since their youth. This bonds them together and creates a wonderfully homogeneous band sound. Since the year 2000, Root 70 has been providing acoustic jazz magic that's rich in character yet always accessible. Their music remains connected to jazz tradition, garnished with an invigorating freshness. With 9 albums under their belt, Root 70 presents their new program at Rank.

unerhört! presents: Alexander Hawkins Trio
unerhört! presents: Alexander Hawkins Trio
British pianist and composer Alexander Hawkins is a creative epicenter from the London jazz scene and is one of the most imaginative European pianists with a surprising range of action.
He plays with Evan Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, Taylor Ho Bynum, Angelika Niescier, Louis Moholo, Shabaka Hutchings, Anthony Braxton, Elaine Mitchener, Sofia Jernberg, and Tomeka Reid. Hawkins works in a variety of creative contexts and creates a unique soundscape by harmonizing his love for free improvisation with his deep fascination for composition and structure. His trio with Neil Charles and Stephen Davis formed in 2012 and masterfully celebrates the connection between freedom and structure, composition and improvisation. Their latest CD, Carnival Celestial (Intakt Records), is a fantastic work of musical contemporaneity, impressively demonstrating what is possible with piano, bass, and drums – one of the most convention-rich formats in jazz practice. American jazz journalist Bill Shoemaker emphatically judged: "Hawkins, Charles, and Davis have clearly advanced the piano trio with Carnival Celestial and expanded its conceptual horizons, thereby contributing to its ongoing vitality.

Hyperculte - A Kaleidoscope for the Heart
Hyperculte - A Kaleidoscope for the Heart
Transpop meets Prekraut Postdisco: A poetic revolution from Geneva that opens hearts with a unique musical language.
Founded in Geneva in 2014, Hyperculte is more than just a band; it's a sonic odyssey. The duo's composition transports you to a world where minimalism meets grandeur. A danceable interplay between melancholy and nostalgia that is truly unique in the Swiss music scene. Their mission? To open hearts at any cost. Their sound combines elements that seem contradictory yet produce astonishing harmony. It's an ongoing journey that stimulates emotions and thoughts. The rhythm takes you, the melody doesn't let you go. A transpop-poetic experience that defies any attempt at categorization.

FLEEB - Melodies of the Night
FLEEB - Melodies of the Night
A personal soundtrack to wander through the streets. Anna Hirsch and Dominik Fürstberger combine vocals, synthesizers, and drums to create soundscapes that invite dreaming, dancing, and feeling.
Anna Hirsch (Vocals, Synthesizers) and Dominik Fürstberger (Drums, Synthesizers) studied together at the Jazzcampus Basel. What's more, they lived together in a shared flat and spent hours listening to music together. Inspired by each other's musical suggestions, they started creating their own music. The result is a blend of soundscapes, minimalism, and diversity that resonates with emotions. "In the end, it turned into music with sweet melodies, beats for dancing in the streets, slow dances with loved ones, and dreams in the night," they describe their creative journey. It's an invitation to lose oneself in the wilderness of sounds and celebrate life.

Isabel Richiusa Trio - Column of Music
Emotion and intellect merge in a contemporary performance, where tranquility and intensity intersect with lyrical poetry and sensual melodics.
In the compositions of Isabel Richiusa, tranquility and intensity, emotion and intellect, poetic sensibility and sensuality unite. Flowing and expressive sounds emerge, drawing their power from rhythms and transforming into virtuosic forms. Meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail. Multi-layered music that creates an intimate atmosphere. A play of senses and perception. With modal tonality, textures, and not only triads and chords, but also fifths and sixths, agile basslines and ostinatos, the lyrical poetry and melodic line resonate. The guitar forms the core of this modern, atmospheric, poetic, contemporary chamber jazz/pop trio. The Isabel Richiusa Trio is an invitation to immerse oneself in the sensual and compelling experience that blurs the boundaries between jazz and pop.

Luzius Schuler - A Neo-Classical Hybrid
Luzius Schuler - A Neo-Classical Hybrid
Luzius Schuler merges electronics and piano into a unique sonic tapestry. His solo program is a fusion of contemporary impressionism and 20th-century aesthetics.
The inventive pianist from Bern, Luzius Schuler, cites John Carroll Kirby, Floating Points, and Bill Evans among his influences. With his albums "Moon is the Oldest TV" and "Penta Fest," the listener enters a world filled with distorted and pitched-down Roland 606 beats, impressive piano manipulations intertwining with twisted synthesizer lines, and multiple layers of sound gradually evolving into marvelous compositions. If this music were a painting, it would be a modern piece carefully overlaid onto a vintage canvas. His music is a poetic document that rightfully earned him multiple awards. Born in 1989, Schuler found his way to the piano at the age of 9. He studied under Colin Vallon and Django Bates.

Colin Vallon Trio – Merging Sounds of Life and Dream
Magical moments with Colin Vallon on piano, Patrice Moret on double bass, and Julian Sartorius on drums.
Since 1999, the Colin Vallon Trio has been enchanting the world with its music. Starting with their first album in 2004 ("Les Ombres"), a magical journey began that took the Swiss trio from Switzerland to Asia. With subsequent albums like "Ailleurs" or "Danse," released on the renowned ECM Records label, the trio established itself in the jazz world. Their music, a moving blend of dreamy sounds and real motifs, has been celebrated at numerous international festivals. Colin Vallon conjures sounds of tremendous expressiveness from the piano with his magical playing. The trio, composed of outstanding instrumentalists Patrice Moret (double bass) and Julian Sartorius (drums), creates a harmonious interplay that can only grow through years of shared musical experience. Björn Meyer and Tom Arthurs - A Duet of Possibilities
A Fusion of Genres, Moments, and Emotions. Björn Meyer and Tom Arthurs unite bass and trumpet into an improvised duo that blends folk, baroque, jazz, and improvisation. Unique, just like themselves.
Electric bass and trumpet might not seem like an obvious combination, but Björn Meyer and Tom Arthurs meld the seemingly impossible into a powerful, sensual duo. Drawing from folk music, baroque music, improvised music, and jazz, they defy genres to create a music as unique as they are, and as unique as the moment in which it is played. The two studio neighbors combine years of experience in sound, with musicians as diverse as Anouar Brahem, Nik Bärtsch, or Julia Hülsmann, to craft deeply instinctive folk songs, tender ballads, and ethereal improvisations. Their concerts are dialogues between two souls that touch on themes of peace, excitement, and reflection.

BLAER - Diving, Floating, and Dancing
BLAER, the quintet of the Swiss pianist Maja Nydegger, combines polyrhythm, minimalism, and drive in an expanse reminiscent of a water current.
Ten years ago, Swiss pianist Maja Nydegger founded BLAER. The quintet creates an auditory landscape that invites you to dive, float, and dance. Together with Nils Fischer (bass clarinet), Claudio von Arx (tenor sax), Simon Iten (double bass, FX), and Philippe Duccommun (drums), whom she met in the context of the Lucerne School of Music, she crafts a minimal jazz marked by expansiveness and an underlying shimmer reminiscent of a water current. The sound is polyrhythmic, minimalist, and driving. "Every note is precise, every pause, every hesitation unfolds its full power," praises the cultural magazine 041. BLAER's music is an experience that transports listeners to a different world, where the everyday recedes behind the pulsating rhythm.

In the third installment of the Backyard Series, we anticipate a unique collaboration: Michaela Frank (Rank) welcomes Gino Miodragovic.
-
Growing up in Aargau, Gino quickly realized that he wanted more. At just 15 years old, he began his cooking apprenticeship in a traditional restaurant in Niederrohrdorf AG. He got his first taste of star-quality cuisine with Markus Arnold at the "Meridiano" in Bern. At Andreas Caminada's talent forge at Schauenstein Castle, he learned the importance of a good team and their mutual respect. After further experiences both domestically and abroad, Gino took on the role of head chef at the "Wirtschaft im Franz" in Wiedikon, where he was responsible for the guests' well-being. His motto is "less is more." He creates comforting dishes full of tension and depth, reduced to the essentials. This philosophy earned his team a Michelin star within a year.
-
With the goal of becoming independent, Gino quit his job at the "Franz," but could not decline a further offer as head chef at IGNIV St. Moritz by Andreas Caminada. After a successful final winter season, Gino is now focusing on his own projects. The Backyard Dinner presents a perfect moment to display his unique style.

Distinguished guests from the capital: In the second edition, Michaela Frank (Rank) and the team from Restaurant Moment in Bern are joining forces both culinarily and musically.
-
Sven Stauffer and Ruben Sägesser run Moment in Bern's old town with a simple, but effective philosophy: They serve regional, seasonal products, accompanied by connoisseur wines. Arguably one of the most exciting restaurants in the capital, it has already received numerous accolades for its cuisine and wine list - and rightly so. Boredom is definitely not an option - they compose their evening menu anew each week, offering moments of pleasure for both meat lovers and vegetarians. At "Moment", the focus is on the present, the season, and fleeting enjoyment, a principle we also embrace in our Backyard Dinners. Every single course is a moment in itself, always a bit different, always special.
-
In addition to the culinary moments, the "Moment" team also provides the appropriate musical backdrop: They will accompany the evening hours with selections from their private record collection. Nicole Rapp from Rank ensures that the menu also finds its way into the glass - with a carefully selected wine accompaniment from Rank's cellar.

Weird Beard
Weird Beard
Film Noir. Spacetrip. Laid-back grooves. Flo Egli, Luzius Schuler, Dave Gisler, and Rico Baumann with Weird Beard, a quartet on an exploratory journey.
When four great musicians take on simple melodies and song structures, magic is created in the microcosm of sounds. Sound clouds to immerse oneself in and forget. Weird Beard hails from Zurich and Bern, has recorded four albums and played concerts in Europe, Russia, and Japan. They have performed at festivals and had many wonderful experiences, but the band works best in well-sounding and smaller rooms, where the nuances of their sounds come into their own. Over the more than 10 years of their existence, the band has constantly changed: Rico and Flo were there from the beginning, Dave joined the band in 2010, and Luzius came on board for the recording of their latest album. This is how it should be, as nothing remains forever. Everything is in motion. The band loves to play so much that they would perform anywhere, even on the moon if necessary. However, they prefer to play in the band room of Weird Beard and, of course, at the Rank, where it sounds best.

Days Like These - A Musical, Culinary Perspective on Everyday Life
Days Like These - A Musical, Culinary Perspective on Everyday Life
The trio Hyperlinx and Rechberg spend this one particularly generic day together. A day, familiar yet unique. Everyday life that deserves attention, observed through sound and sensory perception.
A dive into dreamy moments and sober realities, encounters with the human spectrum between productivity and procrastination, and feelings from comforting harmony to biting loneliness. A day experienced in all its facets, mindfully and sensually. Hyperlinx, the trio consisting of Philipp Schlotter (keys), Matthew Jacobson (drums), and Laurent Méteau (guitar), paints the 24 hours with electronic, jazzy hues, sometimes lovingly poppy, sometimes stimulatingly free. Rechberg interprets the various phases of the day with culinary tidbits on a sensory level. "Days Like These" is a consciously abstract look behind the scenes of routine.

Evelinn Trouble & Philipp Eden (+special Guest)
Fun. Emotions. Depth. Evelinn Trouble and Philipp Eden play a repertoire like legendary vinyl collection and create an atmosphere reminiscent of a smoky jazz club. Nodding heads and snapping fingers.
Evelinn Trouble and Philipp Eden are a duo from Zurich, but at home in the world. The two globetrotters have made a name for themselves far beyond the city limits with their own musical language. They both love music and have a special love for jazz, which has been neglected in recent years due to their own strong projects. At Rank, they give this love the attention it deserves: they play jazz standards and (pop) songs from the last century that are close to their hearts. The long-time friends met on a legendary evening at the Misterioso Jazz Club in Zurich, with a full house, the best cocktails, and lots of smoke. They describe themselves with a self-invented quote: "We're just two souls, playing songs".

Matthias Spillmann Trio
Matthias Spillmann Trio
Dancing. Laughing. Marveling. Matthias Spillmann, Moritz Baumgärtner, and Andreas Lang play jazz. Interactive, raw, yet harmonious.
A saxophonist had organized a session in Berlin but arrived late. The three of them had so much fun playing together that they decided to keep going. They played together again and again, sometimes in Berlin or elsewhere in Germany, sometimes in Switzerland or somewhere else in the world. Their music lives from spontaneity and the moment, which is why they released a live album in 2019. Due to the COVID years, the accompanying tour had to be postponed three times, but it didn't dampen their playfulness. When the three of them get together, it feels like meeting friends from kindergarten with whom you still have a blast. Pure joy of life.

Kappeler Zumthor
Kappeler Zumthor
Quirky. Beautiful. Dramatic. Pianist Vera Kappeler and drummer Peter Zumthor play a touching yet unsettling mix of warmth and abyss.
The two musicians are brimming with ideas and draw from a wide range of backgrounds, including folk music, contemporary music, hardcore noise, and free improvisation. From this diversity, they have developed their own language for their acoustic music, which is characterized by simplicity and melancholy while leaving plenty of room for playfulness and humor. Their shared sonic universe is overwhelming and surprises with a quirkiness that reaches into the surreal. Stories, ballads, and legends interweave, but remain always grounded. In the liner notes for their new album, Reto Hänny writes, "A dreamt world in the hope of banishing horror, in the knowledge that the dream begets monsters."

Silent Neighbor
Silent Neighbor
Surprising, touching, dreamy. Silent Neighbor creates a unique musical experience with their emotional interplay of pop, sound and jazz. They weave a sound carpet that is raw yet embracing - an uncomfortable comfort, so to speak.
The Zurich jazz combo merges elements of songwriting, free improvisation, noise, and jazz into a fascinating and multifaceted soundscape. The three musicians, Philipp Saner on guitar and vocals, Philipp Hillebrand on clarinet and bass clarinet, and Maxime Paratte on drums and percussion, create an emotional roller coaster for their audience. Each note and rhythm seems carefully thought out, yet free and spontaneous. The band combines explosive joy with deep melancholy, wild rhythms with gentle sounds, creating a unique musical experience. Through their songs, they tell stories of love and loss, freedom and loneliness, and hope and despair that deeply move the audience. Although they have been playing together for years, they are always searching for new sounds and expressions. Their project "Silent Neighbor" is a fascinating example of how music can express life and emotions in a unique way.

Nik Bärtsch
Intertwined. Enchanting. Sculpted. Nik Bärtsch (piano) and Lena Schmidt (sampler, synth, vocals) form a duo that plays, shifts and sculpts sound and rhythm.
Zurich-based pianist Nik Bärtsch has created a unique blend of jazz, funk and minimal music with his Zen-Funk trio Ronin, the music ritual group Mobile, and his solo projects. For over two decades, his MONTAGS series has been a cornerstone of Zurich's cultural scene. His musical passion has made him one of Switzerland's most valuable musical exports, performing on stages in Asia, Europe, North America and Africa. His impressive career has been marked by numerous awards. At the Rank, he takes the stage with Lena Schmidt.
-
As a child, Lena Schmidt was fascinated by sounds and experimented with various instruments and styles. After completing her piano studies, she decided not to limit herself to one genre. As a freelance musician, she plays in various formations, as a synthesizer player, chanson accompanist, and with her own band project "Les Enfants Sauvages," where she acts as a singer, keyboardist, and composer. For the Rank concerts, Lena Schmidt and Nik Bärtsch are developing new tracks that emerge from various piano sounds and patterns, played, sampled, intertwined, shifted, combined, composed and sculpted.

The Jazz Trio
The Jazz Trio
Fly. Dance. River. The Jazz Trio plays from the Great American Songbook in a modern, retro-acoustic jazz aesthetic, inspired by white wine, summer, and friendships. On Thursday and Friday, the trio will be animated by the wonderful voice of Ursina.
Florian Egli (alto sax), Jonas Ruther (drums), and Raphael Walser (bass) have been playing together for 15 years. They met at the Jazzbaragge in the old Mehrspur and jammed until the early hours of the morning. As they hadn’t had enough, they played in all the rehearsal rooms in the city. In 2016, they created the legendary series "The Jazz Trio invites" and breathed new life into the old wooden barn with various artists. After playing together, they discussed aesthetics and jazz in the 21st century, sound and freedom. And so, they slowly found their own sound: a clear, sharpened, modern, acoustic retro-jazz aesthetic. If Coltrane were in Zurich today, he would probably attend a concert by "The Jazz Trio".
In addition, on Thursday and Friday, the trio will be supported by the voice of Ursina. Ursina is a singer-songwriter from Zurich. She sings not only in English but also in her mother tongue of Romansh. In 2021, they recorded the album "Life at the Zoo" together, which will now be performed live at Rank.

Yannick Delez String 5tet
Yannick Delez String 5tet
Traveling. Dreamy. Colourful. Pianist Yannick Délez takes us into a world of rich harmonies with his unique chamber jazz project for string quartet and piano.
His powerful and multi-layered compositions combine the music of impressionism with contemporary jazz, creating an exciting symbiosis. In the dialogue between piano and quartet, musical styles are woven into a guiding yet free web that feels equally at home in chamber music, groove and improvisation. Yannick Délez, born in Martigny (VS) and based in Berlin since 2011, plays with his quintet not only virtuously and intelligently, but always in the service of lyricism and beauty.

Bewildered Hearts
Bewildered Hearts
Poetic. Harmonious. Multilayered. Full of longing, Ursula Bachmann's music roams and seeks its way into a world of wonder. The compositions of the Zurich pianist and singer are full of refined poetry and nuanced harmonies.
In her project BEWILDERED HEARTS she presents the Zurich saxophonist Tobias Pfister and the British drummer Phelan Burgoyne. In chamber-musical familiarity, the three musicians liberate the song and advance into new dimensions through multifaceted improvisation. In it, the subtle voice of Ursula Bachmann rises above the multiform textures of the three instruments, setting independent accents. Sometimes she shows herself vulnerable, then again in mild strength. BEWILDERED HEARTS describes the moments that astound the heart.

Yves Theiler Trio
Yves Theiler Trio
Rhythmic. Melodious. Engaging. The Yves Theiler Trio lives total freedom in the expression of feelings. The music of the three young musicians from Zurich makes fearless use of complex rhythmic ideas without making them seem unfamiliar.
Luca Sisera on bass and Lukas Mantel on drums lend pianist Yves Theiler's playing an accessible lightness. The complexity of the compositions is not noticeable at first and merges here into a catchy and musically concrete message. Deeply rooted and quivering rhythms meet singing melodies, opposing worlds are elegantly welded together. The trio shines with an incomparable, sometimes almost orchestral character, their songs are played around and set in motion by improvisations here. n the road together since 2011 and has played over 150 concerts. Worldwide and on renowned stages. Should not be missed.

Mareille Merck LARUS
Mareille Merck LARUS
Atmosphere. Energy. Lyricism. Guitarist Marielle Merck sets out on a journey with her trio. Courageous and full of adventurous spirit.
Mareille Merck, Florian Bolliger (double bass) and Janic Haller (drums) play their way through eventful compositions and dissolute improvisations. The three never lose sight of the essentials. Complex harmonic and rhythmic patterns are connected by lyrical melodies and catchy motifs, interplay and dynamics create atmosphere and space. At times you feel embraced by warm sounds, almost weightless, then you find yourself in the middle of a whirlwind. If you stagger back into silence, whispering dialogues between the instruments draw pictures of an enchanted world. Just as "Larus", the herring gull, flies over the most diverse landscapes, Mareille, Florian and Janic carry us with their music over busy beaches, wide fields, rocky coasts and one or the other lonely island.

Christian Niederers Plan
Christian Niederers Plan
Rhythmic. Melodic. Grooving. Christian Niederer's Plan creates space for airy, smiling melodies with loose, funky drummed beats and solid bass foundations.
Christian's Plan has been forged since 2015. Zurich drummer Christian Niederer has come up with music for his trio and presented exciting patterns, which are painted out by Thomy Jordi on electric bass and guitarist Oliver Keller. Besides wonderfully trashy grunge and hard rock riffs, a lot of material from the registers of the country scene also colours their sound carpet. Guitar and bass keep spinning the musical thread, and Christian Niederer on drums provides the necessary drive, so that finally a great and stirring sound emerges. A warm-hearted groove, which awakens memories of a ride through the steppe and makes you feel the wind in your hair.

Aphorism Quartet feat. Jorge Rossy
Aphorism Quartet feat. Jorge Rossy
Melodic. Authentic. Rhythmic. The Aphorism Quartet with Jorge Rossy plays its independent, undogmatic and emotional version of jazz, searching for the core of melody and following the intuition of the moment.
The four instrumentalists Domenic Landolf, Michael Beck, Arne Huber and Jorge Rossy offer a variety of colours and structures. From chamber music transparency to almost orchestral density. Always with room for spontaneous interplay. All four musicians slip alternately into the role of soloist, accompanist and rhythm section. The quartet's repertoire is made up of compositions by all band members and consists sometimes of affectionate open structures, then again of harmonically more complex jazz compositions or rhythmically powerful, hymn-like pieces. The quartet, which is run as a collective, initially formed in 2013 as the trio Beck, Landolf and Rossy. With the addition of bassist Arne Huber in 2020, the trio became a quartet. In late 2021, they recorded their first album as a quartet, to be released in 2022. "A great formation..." says Georg Modestin from "Der Bund".

Leoni Leoni
Leoni Leoni
Hallucinating. Flickering. Beguiling. Leoni Leoni plays cassettes, sounds, feedbacks. And she sings. The Bernese musician lays her magic over the Rank.
Warmth and security. Leoni's slow pop rolls and hums, flickers and cracks. With her sensitive, almost melancholic voice, she creates hope and also allows resignation at times. Her albums "Super Slow" and "Easy Sleep" draw loving sighing sound worlds. Underpinned by profound synth carpets. On stage, everything is fresh and self-made. Leoni says: "It's an ode to the sound of Yamaha DX7 and a Leslie speaker. And a love song which I dedicate to my plants and all plants."

Whether slow blues, New Orleans funk, gospel ballad or Swiss folk song in African garb. Root Area has deep roots and connects them with the now. Energy is ignited, boundaries are blown up. Unique and exhilarating moments are created. For band and audience. The well-rehearsed trio Tough Tenor has shone on many stages in Switzerland and Germany. Christoph Stiefel Inner Language Trio
Energy. Joie de vivre. Communication. The Zurich pianist Christoph Stiefel celebrates the intensity of the moment with his trio.
For 20 years, Christoph has been searching for the expression of his own inner language with his Inner Language Trio. Together, the trio celebrates the intensity of the moment. Organic and melodic. Already five years in the line-up with Lukas Traxel on bass and Tobias Backhaus on drums. Energy and risk-taking are translated by the trio with rhythmic energy into pure joie de vivre. A sovereign balancing act between conceptual precision work and improvisational unleashing. Only a few formations can pull it off. Nationally and internationally.

Fergus McCreadie Trio
Fergus McCreadie Trio
Lovingly. Fresh. Traditional. Scottish pianist and composer Fergus McCreadie is considered one of the most exciting young talents on the new British jazz scene. With his trio, he will perform at the Rank in Zurich at the end of January.
An innovative blend of jazz and traditional Scottish music. Compositions that take the listener on a tonal journey through Scotland. The gentle, loving tones bring to life scenes from the wild Scottish islands to urban Glasgow, painting vivid pictures of the landscapes that inspired them. Fergus' music is elegant, nuanced and captivating. It's a versatile and passionate play, a skilful dance between touching compositions and exhilarating improvisation.
Rooted in the Scottish folk tradition and with a thrilling rhythmic sensibility, the debut album "Turas" in 2018 launched a wave of enthusiasm far beyond the Scottish borders. Two years later followed the album "Crain" and in 2022 "Forrest Flor", his latest work. All three albums were nominated for the "Scottish Album of the Year Award", which he won with "Forest Floor" in 2022. Awards such as "BBC New Generation Artists" or "Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year", as well as a podium place at "BBC Jazz Musician of the Year" put an additional exclamation mark behind his name. Together with his long-time companions David Bowden and Stephen Henderson, the Fergues McCreadie Trio enchants with rare melodic freshness, deeply fascinating and captivating music full of originality and personality.

Me&Mobi feat. Anna Aaron
Me&Mobi feat. Anna Aaron
Melancholic. Strange. Familiar. Me&Mobi join forces with Anna Aaron to create jazz in the sense of a search for expression without stylistic boundaries. Like a trip, Strange yet familiar.
Fred and Philipp are Me&Mobi. Fred Bürki plays drum components, both acoustic and electronic. Philipp Schlotter plays an electro-acoustic piano with many preparations and effect devices. Met many years ago while studying, the duo's warm, hard yet embracing sounds are now an institution. Anna Aaron sings and uses effects devices to do so. Anna's music takes the instrumental essence of Me&Mobi and takes it to a vocal level. That is touching. That's why Fred and Philipp invited her for their new album.
The album Gysenstein is out in October on Sbire Records. The compositions are fragile and spontaneous, reflecting the peaceful yet harsh environment of winter on the edge of the Swiss Alps. Philipp Schlotter's prepared and distorted acoustic piano, oscillates between club sounds, glittering pads and stubborn patterns. Interwoven with the electronic and organic beats of Fred Bürki, a unique, poignant sound aesthetic emerges. To expand their universe once again, they invited singer Anna Aaron to join in. The recordings are adorned with ethereal voices, sometimes unstructured and sometimes chanted. The collaborative music conveys the floating sensation of a time line stretching as you walk on moving ground. "Exciting to see something like this live and to stand next to it," say contemporary witnesses.

Quintett Pilgrim
Quintett Pilgrim
Well thought out. Generous. Free. The quintet Pilgrim around Zurich tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger has matured into one of the most exciting ensembles in European jazz. On celebrating its 10th anniversary, the band will release its fifth album on Intakt Records in January 2023 and launch it in Rank.
Brilliantly thought-out, yet generously open. The quintet uses ambiguity as a tool. Sometimes freely improvised, sometimes fully notated, but most of the time in between. Their music is full of flexibility, reflecting a life full of freedom in which informed decisions are made spontaneously. For Pilgrim, finished notes are nothing more than a heading, a theme of a possible story, or a door leading into another musical free space. This ensures that the playing remains sharp and truly happening. The five musicians of this band, which has existed since 2010, come from different parts of Switzerland. They perform in various groups around the world and in their still young careers have had the opportunity to learn and play with jazz greats such as Dave Douglas, Nasheet Waits, Dave Liebman or Joey Baron.
In the liner notes of the latest recording, Peter Margasak writes: "On Crosswinds, Pilgrim expresses the incomprehensible - the indescribable - but the quintet does so with breath taking beauty, humanity and tenderness. Irniger and his bandmates have developed a rich contemporary sound that combines ideas from some of the most important US thought leaders in harmony with a distinctly European flair." Jazzthetik is certain: "People who know about jazz will confirm that Christoph Irniger is one of the greatest promises of contemporary Swiss jazz right now."

Oskar
Oskar
Fresh. Dreamy. Meditative. The jazz quartet Oskar enchants with contemporary jazz with familiar warmth of pop.
Oskar are four good friends from Aargau. Growing up, studying and living together, it was a bachelor project at the Lucerne Jazz School that brought them together as a band. Playing with each other for many years and under many names, the project was named Oskar 5 years ago. Oskar is a master at telling stories without words. Wonderfully subtle music that conjures up the greatest adventures in front of the inner eye. Clean and sophisticated, fresh progressive harmonies are placed under poetic melodies. Various influences from indie rock, folk and hip-hop merge into a modern, fresh and contemporary jazz.
Meanwhile on the road as musicians on the biggest stages in Switzerland, they keep finding their way together. With Max Lässer, they were finally able to record an album, which was released at the beginning of 2022.

Straymonk
Straymonk
Intense. Hypnotic. Complex. A harmonious twittering of birds with swinging rhythms. A quartet with a lot of joie de vivre.
Nat Su, Dominique Girod, Jonas Ruther and Gabriel Dalvit from Zurich are Straymonk. Since almost 20 years. Gabriel Dalvit started the band. For one reason: he wanted to play together with his saxophone teacher Nat Su. At first they interpreted music by Billy Strayhorn and Thelonious Monk, thus the name Straymonk. Gradually, the four of them joined forces to form a roving Monk brotherhood. Love of swinging rhythms, complex harmonies and a chamber music sound keeps their order together. So does the love of raclette and white wine. Despite complex music, they rehearse with monkish discipline in a cellar in Altstetten. Until every band member can play the entire repertoire by heart. "The Shape of Jazz to come", says Peter Rüedi, probably the best known jazz critic in Switzerland.

Florian Favre
Florian Favre
Surprising. Fresh. Moving. Florian Favre retouches musical traditions with his prepared piano.
On his current album "Idantitâ", the pianist from French-speaking Switzerland tells stories of witches, cowboys and forced exile. He revives melodies of his native folklore. Surprising twists, lyrical passages and rhythmic sensitivity redraw musical traditions. With exciting sketches and ideas as well as a lot of courage to improvise, a gentle, profound as well as moving music emerges. Some claim that his music has "enchanting" powers. What is certain: Florian convinces with virtuoso joy and captivates with charm.

Shems Bendali Quintet
Shems Bendali Quintet
Poetic. Hopeful. Energetic. Shems Bendali Quintet plays melodies ranging from melancholy to vibrant, always characterised by a soft trumpet sound.
The five musicians from Switzerland and France came together while studying in Lausanne. In 2016, trumpeter Shem Bendali founded the quintet. Shems is one of the great talents of Swiss jazz. With his quintet, he landed in the final of the ZKB Jazz Prize and won prizes at the Cully Jazz Festival and the Avignon Jazz Festival. The acoustic group plays melodic, energetic jazz. One senses an appetite for life, an urge to try everything. Yet their play feels very mature. Familiar and exciting, connected like a family. The two albums Choukheads (2019) and Tabriz (2022) took them to stages in Switzerland, France, England, Italy, Germany.

Grünes Blatt
Grünes Blatt
Longing. Wanderlust. Love. A four-piece band plays Romanian songs. In their own way.
"Foaie verde", green leaf - this is how many Romanian folk songs begin. The lyrics are often not directed at people, but at nature. Romanian folk music is a central element of the quartet around the Romanian singer Irina Ungureanu and the double bass player Dominique Girod. The band searches for a new and improvisational approach to this archaic folk material. The result is a multi-faceted sound that manages to fuse it into a unity with their own lyric settings. Wild, yet very tender. Grünes Blatt wallows in dreamy memories, but never gives up today for tomorrow.

L'Anderer
L'Anderer
Mystical. Versatile. Hypnotising. The drummer Martin Perret from Lausanne reveals a new facet of his band.
The l'Anderer is a loner, he doesn't belong here. He is a Kafkaesque figure. He embodies the soundtrack to a film noir. A musical volcanic eruption, with interrupted lines and a great need for harmony. Groove oriented, the band plays their way through a dreamy melodic harmonic framework with poetic improvisation. With patience and attention, Martin, together with three awesome musicians, leads the listener to inner peace.

Stefan Aeby Trio
Poetic. Dynamic. Open. Three friends travel the world together musically.
They met 14 years ago at a session and immediately hit it off. Similar musical ideas and ideals, the same ideas of sound and energy made making music together a joy. A harmonious, lively interplay that is fun and feels good. Powerful, supporting music, which leads with quiet explosions into the endless expanses of freedom. The trio has been in existence since 2008, during which time they have produced 5 albums, the last of which was self-published this spring. JazzThing writes: "A trio with a magical band sound and a very independent face! Isn't it magic that makes life special?

Christoph Irniger & Ben van Gelder
Digression. Tension. Satisfaction. A simple melody ensnared by a complex world of sound.
Christoph and Lukas met at jam sessions in New York in 2011. The Christoph Irniger Trio was born. The energetic interplay of the international bunch is exciting and soothing at the same time. Their three albums so far tell exciting stories, revel in memories and cast a dreamy glance into the future. In the current edition, the band has expanded to feature Dutch alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder. Together they present the album "Open City", released in September 2020 on Intakt Records. Peter Haffner from the NZZ says: "The music has something very contemporary, sound spaces of a world that is out of joint, and at the same time something supratemporal that gives you hold and comfort." Who doesn't need support and comfort in our turbulent times?

Nicolas Masson Quartet
Nicolas Masson Quartet
Travel. Dream. Reflect. Four exceptional musicians in a playful approach to touching improvisation.
Geneva saxophonist Nicolas Masson founded the quartet out of a single desire: to play together with Colin, Fabienne and Lionel. On the road together since 2008, their music has matured into a minimalist, acoustic sound. Fiery improvised impulses leap over the surface of deep water. Extensive sessions and many concerts together have resulted in two albums: Thrity Six Ghost (2010) and Travelers (2018). On ECM Records, notabene. John Kelman of All About Jazz says: "Travelers is another modern masterpiece for the label. Simply put, Travelers is an album not to be missed. Auk Nova
Auk Nova
Desirous. Dreamy. Urgent. The warm voice of Valentin Kugler ensnared by an embracing, pulsating world of sound.
As a street musician, Valentin travelled through Switzerland, collecting moving encounters. Including with many musicians. The result was the Band "Me, Valentin & You". An album and many awards carried the band far beyond the country's borders. Over the years, Valentin matured and withdrew from the public eye, taking his music into new landscapes. A restless, deep sea and waves lashing against rocks. Together with Philipp Schlotter, Raphael Nussbaum and Hannes Prisi, indie pop with dynamic contrasts and slight dissonant excursions developed. Electronic and acoustic rhythms create a desire for expanse and distance. Always open for new things. The album "Monomorphic" was recorded under the direction of sound engineer David Odlum. Further and more mature, therefore with a new name. On 11.11.2022 Auk Nova will release their first album.

Claire Huguenin & Malcolm Braff
Claire Huguenin & Malcolm Braff
Dream. Feeling. Reflect. Claire and Malcolm rebuild their favourite pop songs, deeply and intensely.
Claire Hugenin's vocals fuse emotion and thought into love. Carried by theory and system, pianist Malcom Braff's music dances in the moment. The singer with a multicultural background and the pianist with African roots are wide-eyed and already treasuring quite a bit of life in their hearts. Together they navigate familiar pop songs with exciting micro-rhythms into uncharted, deep waters and open them soulfully to a new, sensual experience. Loving, honest and intense, true to the motto " I love, therefore I am".
Claire and Malcolm met through music and have stayed together for more. Their music duo is one of many forms of expression - Together as a family and as an experimental socio-cultural project called La Maison-Matrice.

Anna & Stoffner
Anna & Stoffner
Lyrical. Improvised. Moving. Guitar and spoken word in an extraordinary dialogue.
Language becomes music and music becomes language. Anna's moving lyrics set the pace, Flo's guitar sounds enter into a dialogue with her words. Anna Frey and Flo Stoffner have been making music together as the band Anna&Stoffner for over ten years. Since 2019 also as a duo. Without drums and entirely under the sign of improvisation. Content that demands and requires attention. An enrichment for the Swiss spoken word scene as well as for improvised music. Guitarist Flo Stoffner is an internationally renowned figure in the improvisation scene. Anna Frey is a rapper, performer and director. A theatre graduate, she toured all over Europe in her childhood with the circus Theater Federlos. The duo's second EP "0 und 1" will be released on Wide Ear Records in April 2022.

Tie Drei
Tie Drei
Spherical. Atmospheric. Noisy. In the best chamber music manner and with a lot of improvisation, Sonja, Hannah and Johanna play with the changing aspects of the world.
Lots of sound and yet few instruments invite you to immerse yourself and let go. Togehter on the road for seven years, the three musicians write their music in the rehearsal room as a collective and thus continue to develop. Brought together through college and already united on three albums, the three bend time and ask the question: How does a blue whale feel about this? Johanna and Sonja have been playing together for 8 years and know each other from their studies. Hannah Adriana Müller has been a permanent member for just over a year. They found each other in the jazz scene and through social media.

Melody Music
Melody Music
Melody Music is a trio that hails from Bern, Switzerland. Friends Luka Mandic and Luzius Schuler got together in early 2020 to write and learn about studio gear. As their music evolved and they built their skills, they added Timothée Giddey to round out the recording lineup. The final product? Melody Music, an EP which is four tracks of danceable, smooth, well-constructed pop.
The band describes their music as “neon-coloured songs that slowly drip down from the clammy ceiling and glow, a candle that melts into something that already existed, a lava lamp of emotions.” They certainly know what they’ve recorded. These are all smooth, well-constructed tracks that just ease over your ears with strong melodies over nice variations of instrumental textures and tones.

Luzius Schuler - drums, percussion, synthesizer
Timothée Giddey - bass, saxophone
KALI Trio
KALI Trio
Associations with the Indian goddess of death and destruction can only be found in the ecstasy of KALI Trio. This arises quite certainly as well as quickly when listening to their music: Raphael Loher (p), Urs Müller (g) and Nicolas Stocker (dr) combine synthesized piano sounds, effect-fed guitar sounds and minimal drum beats to a modern, radical post-genre style, which could take place anywhere from jazz to techno clubs, and has an immense pull.
Writing, thinking and playing is done as a collective, which is how the three Swiss see themselves and where everyone contributes equally to the creative work. This dynamic resulted impressively on the praised debut "Riot", with which the Lucerne-Zurich trio won prizes plus could give concerts all over the world. But now this story develops even more impressively thanks to "LOOM": the second chapter of a musical process as radically extended as it is intentionally ambitious, and like a mantra.

Dave Feusi & the Groove Gang
Dave Feusi & the Groove Gang
No matter if this band is dishing out soul, jazz or funk hits – the deep reverence for groove is loudly obvious and dangerously infectious. With choice originals in the trunk, these fellas embark on a tune bonanza throughout the whole history of soul and funk music, always with a tip of the fedora towards the jazz and Rhythm & Blues tradition.
Once on the move, they also dig up rare nuggets that haven’t been played for way too long and wow their audience with steamy grooves, blistering solos and catchy shouts. Ecstatic, energetic, edgy – this groove posse takes no captives.

Yumi Ito Trio
Yumi Ito Trio
Yumi Ito packs in her music social stories, which worlds apply, no matter whether small or large, bright or gloomy. The sound is accordingly diverse: an amalgam of all kinds of styles. It seems complicated, but it's not. The Swiss musician, composer, producer and arranger always finds a clear line with style. Like a Zen master who observes, classifies and writes down what is happening from a distance; clear, concentrated and clever.
Yumi Ito lives and works in Basel and Zurich, performs regularly all over the world. Her international trio consists of Polish double bassist Kuba Dworak and Galician drummer Iago Fernandez, she met in 2019 during the Focus Year at Jazzcampus Basel and since then together they form the band under her name "Yumi Ito". After the release of her album "Stardust Crystals", Ito is currently focusing on creating new music together with her trio and preparing for the release of her fifth album as a leader in the fall of 2022.

Colin Vallon Solo
Colin Vallon Solo
The music of pianist Colin Vallon is among the most exciting that Swiss jazz has to offer. The French Swiss conjures sounds of enormous expressiveness from the grand piano. He juggles a huge repertoire of forms and styles, from chanson to classical jazz and classical to oriental. His playing goes far beyond melodies and harmonies; there is something magical about it.
The 39-year-old Colin Vallon was born in Lausanne and lives in Yverdon. He plays in various formations, composes and is a lecturer at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern. With his Colin Vallon Trio, in which he plays with bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Julian Sartorius, and his solo program, he has been giving international concerts for many years, for example in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan and South Korea.

East Sister
East Sister
East Sister is the name of a lonely island on Lake Erie, whose inhabitants are birds. But East Sister is also the name of the trio around Lorraine Dinkel (voc, g), Laura Schenk (keys, voc) and Amadeus Fries (dr). The Swiss band combines fine instrumental sounds and bell-like vocals to an unobtrusively exciting indie-pop being.
As a trio, East Sister plays subtly shaded music, rich in textures, shapes and moods. Between gritty synths and driving beats, piano and electric guitar sparkle, with vocals soaring above in monophonic and polyphonic melancholy.

Silvan Joray Trio
Silvan Joray Trio
Take three young jazz musicians, a concentrated load of musicality, a large portion of joy in playing and a pinch of humor. The result is the melodic jazz of the Silvan Joray Trio, which lives on the one hand from the perfectly coordinated musicians and on the other hand from the catchy and imaginative compositions of the band leader.

Quiet Tree
Quiet Tree
Quiet Tree are Simon Spiess, Jonas Ruther and Marc Méan. The trio's music is rooted in the rich soil of that thing that might best be described as jazz. If one follows the tree metaphor down the trunk, however, branchier analogies emerge: The crown reaches for the cosmic dimensions of the unreasonable while opening itself up to all kinds of sonic futures and echoes of otherworldly worlds.
Or in short: 80s pop warmth with a space-jazz approach, lifted and transported back somewhere around the year 2040. The main focus of the three musicians here is on working with the song form. Each band member is responsible for submitting compositions, and each piece receives a light, improvisational facelift as they play. The manifesto is clear: tell versatile stories through sound and capture color as well as energy with melodies, reaching deep into the earth and up to the highest peaks at the same time.

Mu:n
Mu:n
Mu:n
In the middle of two galaxies, four astronauts, all from different planets, meet. They decide to create a new planet and begin to merge their four bodies of origin. From this a new world is born, a fusion, a contrast, a feeling of pleasant being lost and unpleasant being at home.
Mu:n plays interstellar jazz, often intimate and gentle. Their pieces offer the musicians a lot of freedom, but at the same time they are very dense at certain points. As if between the stars. Found together at the ZHdK, the four musicians from different corners of Switzerland matured into a solid unit, surprising and fresh.

The Great Harry Hillman
The Great Harry Hillman
The Great Harry Hillman is a band evolving from Switzerland’s pulsating experimental underground music scene. A quartet achieving that telepathic level as an improvisatory unit – channeling the emotional truth of the moment. Their concerts may feel like a trip or disruptive voyage; teetering between the lyrical, the surreal and the caustic noise. This adventure is created in real-time, transient scenes resulting from free improvisation around composed themes.
Trippy jazz with a neat amount of punk, performed by an ensemble which is constantly searching for their musical identity, absorbing the contemporary to morphing it into something beautiful and beautifully discomforting at the same time. The Great Harry Hillman has been playing together for 13 years and recorded four albums which have been released on various labels such as Cuneiform Records.

Uto Paradise
Uto Paradise
Uto Paradise creates contemporary instrumental music. Music that is able to evoke transmusical associations and yet never surrenders to eclectic triviality. A sound world with astonishingly sharp contours. Laid back performed and rhythmically gripping. The trio presents a groovy smorgasbord of instrumental indie jazz paired with comforting ambient elements.
Uto Paradise draws on the African-American rhythm tradition, but successfully refuses any labeling as a typical genre band, countering the rhythmic base with tunnel-length reverb guitars, plectrum-hard bass and fusion drums.

Brodbeck Traxel Duo
Brodbeck Traxel Duo
Pianist Jean-Paul Traxel and bassist Lukas Traxel play recent compositions from Brodbeck's pen, as well as songs from the Great American Songbook. One or the other composition from the classical world can also be found in their repertoire, which gives this dynamically finely graded sound a timeless beauty.
It is a modern and free music with a rhythmically traditional backbone. A must for lovers of classical modern and harmonically balanced lyrical jazz.

Anna & Stoffner
Anna & Stoffner
What happens when an underground rapper meets jazz musicians? In the case of Anna & Stoffner, that means first and foremost roaming through twisted, shadowy territories. Dark-toned sound carpets, with lyrics in edgy Zurich dialect abysses. Anna sings about passions growing cold, makes rounds in a neoliberal-influenced glossy city and seeks out the dark corners of social media platforms.
Anna & Stoffner's music captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. With ease, the songs defy the usual musical genres and combine rap with pop, punk and improvisation. The Zurich duo Anna & Stoffner - consisting of rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner - has grown into a top-class live band. With Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Fred Bürki on drums, they develop an intensity that is hard to resist.

Woodoism
Woodoism
The four musicians of Woodoism move confidently and with great versatility through their compositions, the harmonic interplay always perfectly coordinated. Sometimes with infectious youthful coolness and inner peace, sometimes with discreet humor and electrifying playfulness. Since 2020, Woodoism has been supported by Pro Helvetia's Priority Jazz Promotion. The band is a winner of the Jazzpreis' of the Zürcher Kantonalbank and its Audience Award 2018 and has already toured throughout Europe.
After the quartet came together in 2014 as Woodoism, Florian Weiss (tb) Linus Amstad (as), Valentin v. Fischer (b) and Philipp Leibundgut (dr) released their debut album Woodoism three years later. In 2019, the second disc Refugium followed on the German label Neuklang. With their original compositions they move somewhere between cool and free jazz. The band manages to never let themselves get out of their own momentum, and early on they swam free of anything that could be put on them as a stamp. They tell their musical stories with such a differentiated and entertaining sound spectrum that you fall completely under their spell and can't stop listening to them.

Noumuso
Noumuso
Senegal, Guinea, South Africa, Cuba and Switzerland. Timeless and at the same time modern African music produced in Switzerland. Far away from westernized music business ideas, NOUMUSO puts the original sounds of African instruments into a new world where they can touch without getting stuck in the schemes of traditional music. The lyrics are in Malinke, Sousou, English and French and deal with themes such as patience, trust, freedom, cohesion, peace, love, joy and the future of our children.
Mainhead is drummer and producer Ema Nuel (formerly drummer with the successful hip hop crew Sektion Kuchikäschtli, among others). He founded the project together with Djembéfola Yamoussa Sylla from Guinea. The core also includes the Kora player Sadio Cissokho from Senegal, who comes from a well-known Griot family, and bassist David Mäder. This project includes much more than 'just' music and also pursues these longer-term goals: Connectedness and networking in the diaspora, integration, development aid in schools in Guinea, cultural exchange and mediation of African culture in Switzerland.

Lucia Cadotsch
Lucia Cadotsch
Dave Gisler Trio
Dave Gisler Trio
In recent years, Dave Gisler has earned an outstanding reputation as an idiosyncratic sound architect on the electric guitar in the undogmatic force field of contemporary jazz. Founded in 2016, the Dave Gisler Trio celebrates fine-nerved interplay and captivates with a daring spirit of experimentation.
Far from predictable streamlining, the three musicians steer their vibrant body of sound through an open space of contemporary jazz. In 2020 the live recording "Zurich Concert" was released on the label "Intakt Records". The recording is a testimony to the surprising changes of direction and atmospheric torques that define the trip through the all-encompassing sound cosmos of this world-class trio.

Nicole Johänntgen Henry lll
Nicole Johänntgen Henry lll
Henry, the third! In January 2022 Nicole Johänntgen presents her new album "Henry III" in trio format with Jon Hansen (tuba)/Victor Hege (sousaphone) and Clemens Kuratle (drums) at Kultur Lokal Rank. "Henry III" is funky and refreshing, played simply and honestly, grooves and rumbles inspired by New Orleans Jazz.
Henry III bears a lot of funk in it. With crisp melodies and some drum rolls, they make powerful swing again. The new compositions encourage you to sing along, dance along. Simply to join in. But if you listen closely, you will also discover the profound, heart-wrenching side of Henry. The side that slumbers in all of us.

Ursina
Ursina
The singer Ursina grew up in Disentis, a village surrounded by mountains. After studying at the Jazz School in Lucerne, she attended the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Fascinated by the Nordic culture and the music of the likes of Ane Brun, Björk and José González, the year in Copenhagen had a lasting impact.
Her roots and path are evident in her music. Ursina's Romansch and English lyrics sung with a feather-light voice, embedded in the environment of a folky-tinged lo-fi sound. A wonderful wideness of sound with filigree treatment of details. The spaces between the notes are treated with as much care as the notes themselves. This gives the elegant voice plenty of space and peace to savor the unusual melodic loops that make these gorgeous songs all the more memorable.

Raphael Jost Trio
Raphael Jost Trio
Raphael Jost, Raphael Walser and Noé Tavelli - three up-and-coming young musicians who have all made a name for themselves in the Swiss jazz scene with their own bands. All three write their own songs and arrangements for their bands, but together they share a great passion: interpreting standards in a way that may be quite atypical for their young age.
Some outstanding piano trios of jazz history, such as those of Monty Alexander, Oscar Peterson or Ahmad Jamal, are the inspiration when Jost, Walser and Tavelli set out to breathe new life into old songs with an ease and playfulness. The fact that the pianist Raphael Jost also sings and reminds of legends such as Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra, makes the trio a band that is unparalleled in the Swiss music landscape.

Lyft Trio
Lyft Trio
The overwhelming mountains on his traverse of the Alps in northern Italy, the mood in the jungle at the foot of Mount Kinabalu or simply the atmosphere to be observed on a terrace in his chosen home of Lucerne. From his many travels Mario Castelberg draws his inspiration for compositions and his new album "Weit". With Joel Banz (eb) and Janic Haller (dr) Castelberg puts his experiences to music under the name Lyft Trio.
The compositions are a sort of diary of the last 2 years. Mario reflects in the album inner as well as outer processes of his life and puts them into his own version of modern jazz. Janic Haller translates with his drums the composition and the melodic guitar playing into surprising dynamics, grooves and complexity, carried and counterpointed by the attentive and sensitive bass playing of Joel Banz.

Nat Su Trio
Nat Su Trio
